Is it normal that the window for the Dictionary looks always empty when I translate? Also, when I click on the icon Termstar, it never shows the French dictionary, but only the German. Does it mean the French translators translate without a French dictionary? I was told to receive the file 'Dictionary.pxf', which I did, but it didn't seem to add any dictionary to the project.

thanks for helping!

Catherine

Hello
I have the same problem. I downloaded the German dictionary and imported it into Termstar. I can see the pxf file and the proper name file but fuzzy matches and dictionary won't work. It is like having a book with cover but without pages...
Does anyone have a suggestion? I can't continue without Translation Memory!
I have Windows XP and so far no problems with downloaded the files and opening them.
Thanks,
Isabell

thanks for replying! I would like to know what you mean by 'downloaded' into Termstar? All I seem to be able to do is to 'Receive' it like a project (under the project tab) and it asks me if I want to overwrite my project. Where are the tabs for Termstar?

for fuzzy matches, it works, have you tried to add the reference material from the Reference folder under Project> settings> Reference material and there you add all the French files from the other translators.

I have just overwritten the project with the dictionary, and now I have nothing left, how can this happen? (I have a back-up file but need to recreate the project).

Hi everyone,

This post will probably be useless, but at least you will know that you're not alone, as I've got the same problem. Actually I went to the Setting, to select only the ProperName dictionary (all other dictionaries deselected), and this dictionary does not have a single entry!!! :x
So I went to open all the dictionaries I've got:

add
ProperNames
Video_Fr
Video_G

But only Video_G got entries (and basically only in German)

I'm at the moment trying to see this with Karel...

Hi everyone,
Well, I have been advised to reinstall Transit outside the Program File and that is what I will be doing - or trying to do!
But for rest, here is a recommendation from my pc technician who had helped me set up Transit in the first place.
With Windows XP, you need to make sure that you are the administrator. Go into your control panel and check it!

Find the dictionary files, add files, repetitions and so on and right click on the folder or file, go into properties and delete the checked read-only button as well as "unblock" the respective button. That might do the trick for some of you because the files are protected!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Bella, I hope this can help some translators. Just to share what's on my side, I've got Vista, I've checked a few files with extensions .PXF, .FRA, .TXF and they're not "read-only". So this won't do the trick for me. Transit seems working, so I don't think that reinstalling will do either.

Keeping looking........

Hello All,
I reinstalled Transit and Termstar this afternoon outside the program files and just on the hard drive.
It worked fine but for whatever reason, the rest of my software didn't like the changes too much and now my Outlook and a few other programs are not working. Hopefully, I will get that sorted out but at least I was able to download the dictionary and the TM. So I guess, the problem really lies within Windows XP, which is a control freak!
Take care and good luck,
Bella

Hi everyone,

I received an email yesterday from Karel advising to dowload again the ProperNames dictionary and to try again, and guess what, it worked!!! :D So I don't know what changes he did, but I've got now hundreds (might be thoussands!) of proper names! :) I yet noticed a few missing ones, but as the dictionary is yet to be finalised, they might be added later on.

So that was it for me, I didn't have to do anything with the software, the settings, or else. Something was just not working with the previous dictionary.

Hopefuly this will also be the case for you, if not I wish you good luck in resolving your problem, as it might sometime be very frustrating and make you extremely angry (from my own experience!!!)

Dear Xavier,

I have been struggling all day trying to add the updated files from the FTP server. I guessed too that if I downloaded 'fresh' files it may work, however, I just don't know how to add the new ones to the settings. I added them under the tab 'Reference material' and tried in Termstar's tab, however it is not possible to remove the previous ones.

So my dictionaries still look empty!

Can you please explain how you upload the new dictionary file in the settings and how do I know they are the new files and not the old?

thanks a million!

Catherine
